This is my second time doing the Master Cleanse. I have added my first journal as a separate hub. The first time around I was not as detailed and did not blog daily. But some things are nice to be able to reference!

The Recipe

How this cleanse works is to scrub your insides and flush out years of build up caused by bad eating habits. When you eat processed foods, large amounts of meat and junk foods, your body produces a mucus to help move it through your system. This mucus builds up inside your intestinal walls and slowly forms a tar like substance and stays there.

Each ingredient in the formula has a specific reason. Lemons are loaded with nutrients and antioxidants. They also help with bloating and the citric helps break down the integrity of the build up in your system. Cayenne pepper has Vitimins B & C and also acts like a scrub pad inside your intestines breaking away what the lemon juice softens up. The maple syrup is a natural sugar choice to give you energy and keep your sugar levels balanced.

What you do is combine lemonade ingredients and drink 8-12 8 oz servings of this drink everyday. You actually replace ALL food and beverage intake and only drink the lemonade and purified water. The book also says you can treat yourself to an organic mint tea if you would like.

Every night, drink the Sena Tea. Every morning drink the Sea Salt wash. **Stay close to a bathroom for at least 2 hours!**

Lemonade:

2 tblsp fresh squeezed lemon or lime juice (use only fresh squeezed organic, no bottled juice)

2 tblsp Grade B Maple Syrup (easily found at Whole Foods and Trader Joes)

8 oz purified water

1/10 tsp Cayenne pepper

Combine all ingredients together and enjoy your lemonade!

You will also need:

Senna Tea (Smooth Move Tea)

Uniodized Sea Salt (Combine 1tsp Salt with 24 oz purified warm water and drink first thing in AM)


Day 1, Jan 15, 2010

The diet is supposed to start the night prior by drinking Senna Tea. I am aware of the movement it causes and chose not to start with the tea. I wanted a nice day at work! lol!I also am trying this with a friend, Jamie. This is her first time and I dont think she understands how mentally challenging it will be. Last time I did this, Chelsey made it about 12 hours. Only time will tell.

I managed to drink nothing but the lemonade mixture all day at work. I made a triple batch and took 24 oz to my 5 hour shift. At first I was drinking frequently and finished half teh bottle within the first 30 min. I added purified water and diluted what mix was left. I was hoping this would last, but I zoomed right through half the bottle again. The second time I diluted what was left with 1 fresh squeezed lemon and purified water.

I took some Motrin at work for lower back pain (chronic). I hadnt noticed I had a headache before, but noticed I felt better after. I finished the bottle of lemonade just in time to walk in my house and make some more!

I took my second bottle to a 2 hour DR appointment and only drank about 1/3 of the bottle. I went home and finished the bottle while watching TV. I noticed I had a slight headache and after looking at the clock saw the Motrin would have worn off. Possibly from not eating?

I feel energetic and will finish my night with another 12 oz of lemonade and Senna Tea. I hope to go to the gym in the morning...

Day 2: Jan 16, 2010

Last night, my sleep was interrupted with mild cramping from the Senna Tea. Iv used the tea numerous times before without discomfort. The only change was I normally follow the tea with a large glass of water and last night I did not. Tonight I will do the tea and follow with water to see if the cramping is reduced.

Today I woke up about 7AM and started drinking the salt water wash at about 730. The wash is best drank a bit on the warm side and tastes a bit like chicken noodle soup broth. It wasnt too bad! By 830, my body had processed it and I spent the next hour and a half close to a bathroom. Afterward, I felt pretty good and started with the lemonade mix.

At about 11am, I went to the gym. At first I felt sluggish, but I think it was just too early in my day. I did 2.25 miles running on the treadmill and a complete leg workout weights. Afterwards I felt energized, but my body was tired like any other day after the gym.

Im noticing Im not drinking as much lemonade as I did the first time around. Im struggling to finish the full 64 oz. today. **I did not drink the full amount. I was only able to drink about 48 oz.**

Jamie wasnt able to continue. She went to a Spanish class and ran out of lemonade. Then her sister talked her into food. Its a tough break. When your mind only focuses on food, then you will give in. To avoid this I try to focus on the end goal and how I will feel. I remember feeling amazing last time!

Weight: 188.2 (3.6 lb difference)

Day 3: Jan 17, 2010

Morning Entry:

Last night the Senna Tea ran straight through me taking a mere 2.5 hours to activate movement. The cramps were worse than the first night even though I drank plenty of water. Thankfully it all happened right before I went to bed and I was able to get a full 7.5 hours of sleep.

I woke up craving peanut butter, but not feeling hungry. From everything I read, what you crave is what your body is detoxing. Am I detoxing protein? Oil? Hmmm. This is quite peculiar to me since I only eat peanut butter a couple times a year. It seems like I can actually taste it...

The headache I had most of yesterday evening and last night is gone. I also was pretty grumpy but feel like Im in a much better mood today. This detox seems to give me emotional mood swings.

Afternoon Entry:

I also am noticing that I have a weird smell to me. I showered about 15 hours ago and havent done anything but watch a movie and go to bed. The smell doesnt smell like BO, but more like rotten eggs or something. It seems to be all over and not just my arm pits. Il have to do some research to see what is causing this. I also have a pimple outbreak on my face. I never get acne between cycles and have little ones in several areas. Is the smell and acne caused by my body ridding toxins and waste through my pores?

Evening Entry:

Today is proving to be the toughest day yet! I drank the first 24 oz of lemonade really fast and the second bottle is going down slowly. I am not hungry per se, but cant stop thinking about eggs and saute veggies! Iv gotten up and looked in the fridge (which I thankfully cleaned out) numerous times. I even cheated and had 3 bites of cottage cheese after Jamie put the thought in my head. My stomach was almost immediately upset! Guess that's what I get for cheating. I drank water and went back to the lemonade. I think I might go walk the Las Vegas Strip to get my mind off food! I felt good after exercise yesterday. Maybe that's what I need today.

I strolled LVB and ended up doing 4.5 mile in 1 hour and15 min. I fell great now and the tummy ache from the cottage cheese went away! Il finish my day with Sena Tea. Im drinking it much earlier today because I have a personal trainer apt in the morning...

***NOTE! THIS NEXT PART IS DISGUSTING! READ ONLY IF YOU HAVE A STRONG STOMACH AND ARE OKAY WITH BODILY FUNCTIONS!***

Today the salt water wash took about 30 minutes to make a movement. My first movement was mainly liquid like yesterday. But yesterday was neon yellow and today was a dirty brown. Today, amusingly, there were 3 pieces of corn. One looked like I had bit into it. The other 2 were whole. Whats very interesting about this is I havent eaten corn in about 2 months!! GROUSE! Where did that come from?

Day 4: Jan 18, 2010

Morning Entry:

Last night was brutal!! That darn Senna Tea had me up with horrible cramps and bathroom usage at 130, 230, 315, 5, 545, and again at 650. And where is the "stuff" coming from!! I havent had solids in days and yet solids keep coming out!! GROUSE!

I also woke up with a thick white coating on my tongue. I had to really scrub with my toothbrush to make it go away. The body smell isnt as dominant today.

I went and did a 20 min cardio warm up on the elliptical machine before doing the personal trainer weight training workout. Kyle kicked my butt with loads of abs, arms, and back!! Thankfully he laid off the thighs because me legs are a bit sore after the 4.5 mile walk yesterday.

I feel pretty good though. Im starting to crave the lemonade and have already finished 1/3 of the days portion. I have struggled to finish 2/3 the last 2 days. Im not even bothered by thoughts of food today. I even cooked eggs scrambled with veggies and served in warm corn tortillas for Jamie. This is one of my favorite breakfasts and I didnt even get an urge to cheat!! Im pretty sure Im in the fat burning zone too! I was down another 2.2 lbs today!

Evening Entry 5pm:

I had my Chiropractic apt today and after my headache went away. The DR office about 3.6 miles from the house and I decided to walk it home. I ended up stopping at a McDonalds to use a bathroom and the smell almost made me vomit! I couldnt wait to get out of there and my stomach was upset for about an hour. I drank the salt water wash around 1:30 and and took a nap. By 4 there was still no movement and I feel bloated! About 415 I forced some movement. I think it works better first thing in the morning! Or does it not work when you have sweated your buns off at the gym and your body needs salt and water to replenish? I also noticed the coating was back on my tongue and my breath is kinda stinky!

I thought I would have drank more of the formula by now, but am only 12 more ounces down. Im falling about 12 oz short everyday... I also had a weird dream about cheating. I tried to eat chips and dip but when I opened the bag of chips, there was only crumbs left. I went back to the lemonade in my dream. Am I detoxing bad carbs?

Good Night Entry:

Its abot 10p and I have just finished the Senna Tea. Im going to drink an equal amount of water and head to bed soon. I want to get up at 6 so I can do the salt water wash prior to work.

Today I managed to drink 72 oz of lemonade. It was not easy. I wasnt really that hungry even though my thoughts kept straying to food. I even watched Jamie eat a Subway Tuna Sandwich and was a little turned off by the smell of the tuna fish. I really thought that would be a challenge since Ive been craving a subway veggie sandwich since I started.

Im ending my day with soar muscles, a stiff neck from the chiro and an overall good feeling about the cleanse. Hopefully tomorrow I wont be as cranky as I am tonight.

***AFTER NOTE*** I ended walking 3.6 miles home from a DR apt later that morning. In reflection, Im quite amazed at how much energy I truly have with no food! 1/20/10

**NOTE: Im premenstrual and should be starting my period in the next 5 or 6 days. Is my crankiness due to hormone influx due to my cycle being right around the corner?**

Day 5, Jan 19, 2010

Afternoon Entry:

Last night I drank the Senna tea around 10p and went to bed about 11p. I notice when I stop drinking the lemonade and switch to the tea, within and hour, I crash! Im guessing its from the lack of sugar in the maple syrup. I also chased the tea down with an equal amount of water hoping to eliminate the cramping. This was to no prevail. :( I was up to use the bathroom like 6 times and I cant imagine much more coming out of me!!

When I made the lemonade this AM, I did single servings and filled my water bottle up. I discover what I thought was 3 serving is really just barely over 2 and I have only been getting about 32oz of the recommended 64oz. Iv been struggling to drink that much! My body wants water not lemonade! So with this in mind, Im attempting to drink a full 64 oz today! Its only 230 and Iv drank about 24oz. Im drinking at the same rate I have been and I thought I was drinking faster. My tummy is just full!! (Yet water still seems yummy... hmmm)

Today at work I discovered how programmed I am. We have daily lunch specials and we all try them to describe to guests. Without even thinkink I took a bite of fried sea bass, tomato and pineapple. The a second bite of just fish. Now granted, these were not huge bites, but my stomach revolted none-the-less! I had horrible stomach pains and a burning sensation. I drank some water to try and help. The greasiness of the sea bass made me so NAUSEOUS!! It was all I could do to not vomit! GRRRRRRRR!

Yesterday I didnt finish my blog! The coating on my tongue from day 4 was thinker and ickier on day 5! It took lots of toothbrush scrubbing to get most of it to go away! I struggled to finish the full 64 oz required and finished my day at about 60oz, the most Iv drank yet.

I did make it to the gym for a ZUMBA class. It was one full hour and I sweated my bum off, but was not feeling fulfilled physically. I ended my day with a large glass of SennaTea and water.

Weight: 182 (9.8 lbs total difference)

Day 6, Jan 20, 2010

Afternoon Entry:

Last night was quick and not so brutal! The Senna Tea definitely has things moving! As disgusting as it is to talk about, I expelled spinach looking greens and chunks of carrots. This is amusing to me since I havent had carrots since I made veggie soup in early DEC.

Today I am experiencing my first day of exhaustion. I went to work and barely drank anything. I forced 16 oz down me and just have no appitite for anything. I have been craving chocolate since my alarm went off at 6 am though.

After work I wanted an egg really bad, but I think my body is craving protein from all the working out and weight training, cuz Im not hungry. I really wanted just one scrambled egg, but Jamie had eaten the last of the eggs this AM... No cheating for me today. Sigh.

Tonight Im skipping working out entirely. My bi-ceps are so tight and sore I cant straighten my arms out and as I lay on the couch, Im falling asleep just typing this. Maybe a one day break isnt so bad. This will be my second day not working out in 12 days. Im okay with that. I think my body needs rest from all the interrupted, sleepless nights.

Im also hardly drinking the lemonade at all. I havent even finshed 32 oz yet and the day is more than half way over...

Good Night Entry:

Well, today is over! Finally! I didnt quite make it to 48 oz, FAIL! I just wasnt hungry. I had to force myself to drink water and I was completely exhausted all day! I did break down and eat one scrambled egg. I used a very little bit of olive oil to stop the sticking. The olive oil was very strong in the egg flavor. Overall, yeah I cheated, but it was just one egg. It was also the most amazing egg Iv ever tasted and I was super full by the time I finished. Really! One egg filled me up!

I just finished a large glass of Senna Tea and can feel it already processing through me! Will my body get any protein from the egg?! Sigh. I hope my "splurge" doesnt mess up 6 days worth of efforts!

Im going to bed.

Day 7: Jan 21, 2010

VICTORY!

Last night I amazingly slept 5 full hours before my first movement. I set my alarm and fell right back to sleep until 7... This is when I experienced the "mucus" phase. A couple days ago, I had it but briefly and then did the salt water wash. So I wasnt sure if that was it for sure. But this time, Im for sure.

Although I feel well rested, I have a horrible headache, feel light headed and weak. I drank some lemonade, but to no prevail. So I decided to cook another egg. I had one scrambled egg and a 1/4 cup of unsweetened apple sauce. As soon as Jamie gets back from the grocery store, Il have some OJ!!!

Im supposed to have OJ and lemonade all day today with loads of water. This is supposed to allow my stomach to adjust slowly. I already blew that by having "breakfast!" LOL! I already put the soup in the crockpot and have every intention of drinking OJ and water until about 2p (its 8a right now) and then having some veggie soup broth before I go to work. From some of the other journals I have read, it seems easing back into food should be done on a stay at home day! I do not have that luxury!

Follow Up! Feb 4, 2010

The first 2 days of OJ and soup where rough and I ate chunks of soup right away, even had scrambled egg in a corn tortilla. Almost everything solid gave me a tummy ache! Plus I stared my period on day 4 afterward. This came with toms of cravings and lack or caring what I ate! I decided pizza was a great idea, turns out it wasnt... neither was sushi, beer or vodka! I basically had stomach cramps for a week! I also failed to listen to the part that says no dairy or baked good for 7 days. I ate ice cream, enjoyed cheese, and quiznos... YIKES!!!

**NOTE FOR NEXT TIME** Dont plan a 10 day vacation while you are going to be in the "introduction of solids"  phase again!

I also shot right back up to 192 during my period and had to take the Senna Tea and the PMS tea to help with things moving and to stop bloating. After the effects of period bloating, my weight was 187 (today is first day w/o bloating). So I but 6 of 12 lbs back on, exactly like I was supposed to.

Pauly! Just dont do it for the wrong reasons! This is not a weight loss diet! This is to cleanse you system! After doing this, it should help a nutritious diet work better for you! Make sure if you try the cleanse you are doing it to clean your system not shed pounds!

Hey i dont know where to find the tea?! does it have to be senna tea? anyways i am really inspired by ur journal i hope to start my mc tomorow night but i might have to use a different lax tea until i find the senna?! ugh this is going to be tought but i NEED this i am so unhealthy since my pregnancy more than 2 yrs ago... i was 135lbs pre prego and ive been holding onto my weight of 195-200lbs ever since... hope this helps me get out the bad toxins and crave GOOD food rather than taco bell... haha :o)

If you look next to Day 1, you will find a link to buy the Senna Tea online. The first choice is the brand I use. Yes it has to be senna tea. You should be able to find it in any major grocery store. You look in two places: the tea isle or the herbal supplement isle. Good luck on your journey and keep me posted how it goes!! FYI: Everyone will tell you it is horrible for you, that you are crazy to not eat, and be negative. Try to keep a strong mind and stay positive! You will feel better in the end!!

Hello, I am on the master cleanse now for the 2nd time, and I tell you it is better this time around. First time I only made it 7 days and I didn't do the juice and soup thing, I went right into eating solids and that wasn't a great idea. I have to be in work at 7:30am every morning, so I do the tea in the morning and the salt water flush at night. It still cleanses you the same. What I do is fill 4 16.9oz water bottles of lemonade. I drink about 3 in an 8 hour period and the last one when I get home from work at around 5pm. I drink my tea at work in the morning and the salt water at around 8pm at night. I am on day 5 today, and I feel great. I haven't been jogging like I normally do, because I want to save my energy, but after the cleanse I will get back into it. I started the cleanse at 136lbs. and I am now 130lbs., so I lost 6 pounds in 5 days. After the 10 days hopefully 14, I am planning on becoming a vegan. I want to be as healthy as possible and in the best shape as possible. I am so glad I found a page that I can tell my story and here other peoples stories. I have not cheated at all first time even though I only went 7 days, and I haven't cheated this time either and I am still going. I don't actually have a headache the the first time, but my eyes always feel heavy. I am also using the bathroom alot, but I really haven't seen anything to disturbing yet. Before the cleanse I wasn't really a bad eater, but I did eat meat and a lot of sweets, and that is what I really want to give up. I do see a lot of dark brown liquid also, so maybe that is the mucus you explained. what comes out is so dark that I really wouldn't be able to tell what it is anyway. My tongue isn't really fuzzy at all, but my mouth is always dry, so I drink tons of water. on top of the 4 bottles of lemonade, I must drink atleast another 6 bottles of water throughout the day. As for the cayenne pepper I use the one bought in the grocery store, and not organic, because it is to hot and would make the lemonade unbearable to drink, so that is my shorcut through the cleanse, but it still seems to loosen the mucus on my inner walls, so it works for me. I also drink 1 cup of natural mint tea once a day mid morning at work, that is a good treat. Although your not suppose to take anything on the cleanse, I do still take my birth control pill, but that is the only other thing I do that I probably shouldn't do, but not ready to have anymore children, so I'll take my chances. I will keep you posted on my progress as the cleanse goes on. Thanks for being a listener!

Hello Miss Jersey!

Its great to hear from you! Sounds like you are breezing right through the cleanse this time! My only concern is which pepper you are using. I did not buy organic cayenne pepper, but I did use cayenne. One of the important benefits of the cayenne pepper is regulating your body temperature so you do not get sick. I know it is spicy, but it is important to keep your body temperature from dipping and spiking.

The birth control pills shouldnt harm anything, but check back in the near future to learn some VERY interesting effects they can have on you and your interactions with the opposite sex!!

Great reading about your journey and Im a listener for the good bad and ugly anytime you need it!!

Yes, I am using cayenne red pepper, it just isn't organic. I did try organic the first day but it was unbearably hot and not pleasent so I went to the grocery store and bought regular cayenne pepper which is still hot but not as potent. I must say I haven't felt sick yet, and hoping I won't have to. I will definitely check back about the pills, because I am interested in what they can do.

I am so pleased that I found this hub. I just started the master cleanse and it is nice to see what others are experiencing. I am on day 3 and have not dared to try the salt water so I have been drinking the tea at night and in the morning. I am sort of lucky in the sense that I was laid off because it is hard to plan around the tea and it sounds as though drinking the salt water makes things a little more predictable. I thought doing the cleanse this month would be good because I have to be disciplined for Ramdan but I am finding that there are just more temptations because breaking my sunrise to sunset fast with lemonade is difficult when I am cooking delicious chicken and rice for those around me. On top of that, the others around me who are also fasting for Ramadan take me grocery shopping with them and show me all the new fruits they want to eat for the morning meal. I am a sucker for fruits!

The next part is a little gross:

I was wondering if someone could explain what the mucus stage looks like. :S I am only on day 3 and am seeing some strange things that cannot be identified. I am also wondering if anyone has actually eliminated the tar-like stuff that I see online. I am really hoping I am doing this cleanse before any of that has taken place.

Kinda grouse, but the mucus stage is kinda like snot (the thick kind when you are really sick)coming out instead of poop. I dont know how else to explain it, but thats what it made me think of.

The first time I did the cleanse in 2008, I had already been living a fairly healthy lifestyle for 2 years. I was eating pretty much vegetarian and no fast food. I did have big (1-2 inch) strip of tar like stuff come out. It was repulsive. To think I had only put lemonade in my body for 5 days and had solid, black, slimy stuff coming out... According to what I read, the first cycle could take several days or even 7-10 days before you reach the tar phase...

I just know for sure that after the tar phase, you will reach the mucus phase again. Thats when you stop.

Mistress Cleanse

After doing the cleanse I went back to eating healthy. I also cut out dairy and gluten for medical purposes. I was working out pretty heavily, but then spent the summer goofing off in the Rocky Mountains. I managed to lose a mere 8 pounds, but 6% body fat and have kept it off. Now Im settled back into life and am ready to get serious about weight loss again.

I still have 10% body fat I want to lose. Feel free to join me on my Cabbage Soup journey!
